Ayrton Senna’s full-face helmet, signed by the man himself, and racing suit from the 1991 Championship season have been sold at auction, some 18 years after the legendary Brazilian died on the track in the summer of 1994.
The items were sold at the Race Retro Sale at Silver stone this spring. The helmet, which Senna had worn several times, sold for $114,000 to current McLaren boss Ron Dennis. The race suit sold for $54,000.
It’s likely that more Senna memorabilia will be auctioned off over the next few years, especially given that 2014 will make the 20th anniversary of the driver’s death aged just 34. For example, a 1984 Toleman he raced is expected to raise £750,000 at a Silver stone auction when it goes on sale on May 16, and is probably the ultimate piece of F1 memorabilia. It is the vehicle Senna made his Formula One debut in in 1984, with a stunning drive in a rain-lashed Monaco Grand Prix.
Interest in the driver was renewed in 2010 with the British documentary, Senna. If you’re interested in far more modestly priced race suits, make Demon T weeks your first port of call.
