Designer leather handbags can last people for a long time, but to keep the items in tiptop shape, owners have to take good care of them.
The British weather can be unforgiving and it’s been particularly bad over recent weeks. Consumers up and down the country have had to put up with sleet, snow, hail, rain and icy winds.
Even armed with umbrellas, it can be hard for people to stop their handbags from being lashed by freezing water.
Offering advice to fashion lovers on handbag.com recently, Amy Lewis stated: “Though severe water mark stains on your new designer handbag are something you should really consult a professional garment cleaner about, there are a few things you can do before it gets that far.”
She suggested that regardless of the material involved, it’s wise to regularly use a protector spray, pointing out that “prevention is always better than cure”.
Addressing leather handbag owners specifically, she added: “If you act fast you should be able to limit any rain or water damage by gentle wiping the bag with a dry towel. Tanned leathers are more susceptible to staining, so if you do get caught in a downpour, give your handbag a wipe down as soon as you reach dry land.”
When the weather is really bad, it might be wise for consumers to leave their favourite bags at home.
Meanwhile, Ms Lewis went on to note that when handbags are noticeably damaged by rain or water, it is time to call the experts in. While some dry cleaners offer specialist leather or handbag services, an expert technician may be needed.
